Air conditioning Unit

Some of the below are possible things that you may see wrong with your AC Unit and hopefully you can follow the steps to see if you need to contact us

1. My Air Conditioning Does not turn on at all
The first and most obvious test here is to check the power source. If you confirm that the outlet is not energized you may want to contact an electrician. If this is the case, we are qualified as well to diagnose the situation. If the outlet or source is energized but the air conditioning unit will not turn on, give us a call and we will be right out to troubleshoot and diagnose the situation.
In this situation there could be a problem with any of the following: (We always recommend contacting a professional like us in this case)

  • Unit Wiring
  • Thermostat
  • Compressor
  • Overload and/or relay
  • Selector switch
  • Control board
  • 2. The fan will run, but no cold air is generated?
The first obvious check here will be to check the thermostat setting? Is it dialed correctly? Is the know allignment off thus showing incorrect position? Is it possible the unit is completely dead like the first possible problem above? If not, it is likely that there could be an issue with the compressor, the condenser, or the evaporator. Each of these items are generally not something that can be a serviced by an individual and will require professional repair.

    3. The compressor is not running but there definitely is power to the unit: If this is the case you could have an issue with any of the following:

  • Compressor
  • Overload and/or relay
  • Thermostat
  • Burnt wiring
  • Bad selector switch
  • Capacitor
  • If this is beyond your ability to diagnose you can give us a call. These items are generally serviceable but do take knowledge of the unti. The compressor will require a professional to repair if repairable. Burnt wiring could be a signification of a deeper problem.

    4. My air conditioner seems to be working but the air is not that cold?
As a general rule, we believe it is a good idea to test your theory before spending money. First, get a thermostat to check both the temperature coming into the unit and the temperature leaving the unit. There should be a difference of about 20 degree or at least close to that. If the incoming is 85 degrees F, then the air leaving the unit should be sloe to 65 F or so. If it is not even close there is an issue. some possible causes for this situation are listed below:

    Air damper
Always make sure the Air damper is closed. If not, this will reduce the level of efficiency on your air conditioning unit and will cause the unit to work harder and not create as much cool air.

    The Cover
If you put a cover on the unit during the winter, make sure you did not forget to remove it now during the warmer months. A cover left on the unit will cause inefficiencies, and could result in lower leaving temperature.

    Condensing coils
One of the most common reasons for an under-performing air conditioning unit are the condensing coils due to debree, lint, dust, etc. This is even more common in San Diego and the surrounding areas due to the climate, air, and humidity levels. It does take some dis-assembly to clean these coils but can be done by the home or business owner. Most importantly though, we recommend doing it, either on your own or by calling us. If these coils become “dirty” to the extent that the AC is under performing, running the unit over extended periods can actually cause further damage. So the negatives are easy, 1) poor cooling ability and 2) the potential to damage your unit. The small cost to clean these coils is well worth to increase the life of your AC as well as enjoy an more efficient sytem that provides cooler air quicker.

    5. The AC does not shut down?
This could be a normal situation for many air conditioners. If it will not stop making cool air that is a different story, but if the fans runs at a low humm it is probably just fine. You may want to give us a call for just a free quick consultation:

    6. The AC Unit is putting our very cool air, but the room and/or building is not cooling much.
Too often in this industry we find that the initial installation was not correct. Or perhaps it was, and there was additional construction to the building after the fact. In either case, it generally comes down to too small of a unit, or poor duct and ventilation work on the part of the installers. Ontime experts is fully capable and qualified to perform an audit anywhere in San Diego county. Our team can arrive onsite and after a thorough investigation of the situation we will be able to recommend the most efficient solution to solve your problem. In most cases, we can offer these audits free of charge so it is worth the phone call.

    7. I hear a motor running, but there is no air blowing:
All Air Conditioners contain two motors. The compressor and the fan. It is possible that the current situation is due to the compressor running and making cool air, but the fan not working thus not pushing the air out to the plant, home, or office. If this is the situation, it is generally less costly to repair than the compressor motor. There are many potential causes for this and we recommend calling us in to diagnose.

    8. Water is leaking from the AC?
It is common for water to leak from all ac uunits due to the collected condensation. To avoid water from forming in the fron of the unit, it is good installation practice to tilt the unit slightly so that the condensate can run off the back and avoid unwanted small puddles. If you find excessive amounts of water around the unit, it is time to hire a professional.

Just a few tips from Ontime Experts to keep your AC unit running smooth:

    1. Replace your electrostatic filter at least once a month if using the unit normally

    2. Always keep a close eye on your coils. If they are dirty, clean them, if they are real dirty that means they have been neglected and it is better to perform a professional clean by using a service like Ontime Experts. These coild are protected, thus not in plain sight. They should be cleaned annually for optimal air conditioning performance and life of the unit.

    3. Never turn your unit off and then right back on again. They cycle like a refrigerator, so always wait a minimum of ten minutes before repowering on your unit after shutting it down to avoid any potential damage.
